On Sariputta asking what a Bhikkhu(Monk) is to devote himself to, Buddha shows what life he is to lead.


4.16 SARIPUTTASUTTA[]

Translation[]

1. 'Neither has before been seen by me,'--so said the venerable Sariputta,--'nor has any one heard of such a beautifully-speaking master, a teacher arrived from the Tusita heaven. (961)

2. 'As he, the clearly-seeing, appears to the world of men and gods, after having dispelled all darkness, so he wanders alone in the midst (of people). (962)

3. 'To this Buddha, who is independent, unchanged, a guileless teacher, who has arrived (in the world), I have come supplicatingly with a questionfrom many who are bound in this world. (963)

4. 'To a Bhikkhu(Monk) who is loath (of the world) and affects an isolated seat, the root of a tree or a cemetery, or (who lives) in the caves of the mountains, (964)

5. 'How many dangers (are there not) in these various dwelling-places at which the Bhikkhu(Monk) does not tremble in his quiet dwelling! (965)

6. 'How many dangers (are there not) in the world for him who goes to the immortal region, (dangers) which the Bhikkhu(Monk) overcomes in his distant dwelling! (966)

7. 'Which are his words, which are his objects in this world, which are the virtue and (holy) works of the energetic Bhikkhu(Monk)? (967)

8. 'What study having devoted himself to, intent on one object, wise and thoughtful, can he blow off his own filth as the smith (blows off) that of the silver?' (968)

9. 'What is pleasant for him who is disgusted (with rebirth, &c.), O Sariputta,'--so said Bhagava(Lord Buddha) ,--'if he cultivates a lonely dwelling-place, and loves perfect enlightenment in accordance with the Dhamma, that I will tell you as I understand it. (969)

10. 'Let not the wise and thoughtful Bhikkhu(Monk) wandering on the borders be afraid of the five dangers: gad-flies and (all other) flies, snakes, contact with (evil) men, and quadrupeds. (970)

11. 'Let him not be afraid of adversaries, even having seen many dangers from them; further he will overcome other dangers while seeking what is good. (971)

12. 'Touched by sickness and hunger let him endure cold and excessive heat, let him, touched by them in many ways, and being houseless, make strong exertions. (972)

13. 'Let him not commit theft, let him not speak falsely, let him touch friendly what is feeble or strong, what he acknowledges to be the agitation of the mind, let him drive that off as a partisan of the dark one (i.e. Mara, the deathlord). (973)

14. 'Let him not fall into the power of anger and arrogance; having dug up the root of these, let him live, and let him overcome both what is pleasant and what is unpleasant. (974)

15. 'Guided by wisdom, taking delight in what is good, let him scatter those dangers, let him overcome discontent in his distant dwelling, let him overcome the four causes of lamentation. (975)

16. 'What shall I eat, or where shall I eat?--he lay indeed uncomfortably (last night)--where shall I lie this night? let the Sekha(disciple) who wanders about houseless subdue these lamentable doubts. (976)

17. 'Having had in (due) time both food and clothes, let him know moderation in this world for the sake of happiness; guarded in these (things) and wandering restrained in the village let him, even (if he be) irritated, not speak harsh words. (977)

18. 'Let him be with down-cast eyes, and not prying, devoted to meditation, very watchful; having acquired equanimity let him with a composed mind cut off the seat of doubt, and misbehaviour. (978)

19. 'Urged on by words (of his teachers) let him be thoughtful and rejoice (at this urging), let him break stubbornness in his fellow-students, let him utter propitious words and not unseasonable, let him not think detractingly of others. (979)

20. 'And then the five impurities in the world, the subjection of which he must learn thoughtfully,--let him overcome passion for form, sound and taste, smell and touch. (980)

21. 'Let the Bhikkhu(Monk) subdue his wish for these Dhammas and be thoughtful, and with his mind well liberated, then in time he will, reflecting upon Dhamma, and having become intent upon one object, destroy darkness.' So said Bhagava(Lord Buddha) . (981)

‘‘Sadevakassa lokassa, yathā dissati cakkhumā;

Sabbaṃ tamaṃ vinodetvā, ekova ratimajjhagā.

‘‘Taṃ buddhaṃ asitaṃ tādiṃ, akuhaṃ gaṇimāgataṃ;

Bahūnamidha baddhānaṃ, atthi pañhena āgamaṃ.

‘‘Bhikkhuno vijigucchato, bhajato rittamāsanaṃ;

Rukkhamūlaṃ susānaṃ vā, pabbatānaṃ guhāsu vā.

965.

‘‘Uccāvacesu sayanesu, kīvanto tattha bheravā;

Yehi bhikkhu na vedheyya, nigghose sayanāsane.

966.

‘‘Katī parissayā loke, gacchato agataṃ disaṃ;

Ye bhikkhu abhisambhave, pantamhi sayanāsane.

967.

‘‘Kyāssa byappathayo assu, kyāssassu idha gocarā;

Kāni sīlabbatānāssu, pahitattassa bhikkhuno.

968.

‘‘Kaṃ so sikkhaṃ samādāya, ekodi nipako sato;

Kammāro rajatasseva, niddhame malamattano’’.

969.

‘‘Vijigucchamānassa yadidaṃ phāsu, (sāriputtāti bhagavā)

Rittāsanaṃ sayanaṃ sevato ce;

Sambodhikāmassa yathānudhammaṃ,

Taṃ te pavakkhāmi yathā pajānaṃ.

970.

‘‘Pañcannaṃ dhīro bhayānaṃ na bhāye, bhikkhu sato sapariyantacārī;

Ḍaṃsādhipātānaṃ sarīsapānaṃ, manussaphassānaṃ catuppadānaṃ.

971.

‘‘Paradhammikānampi na santaseyya, disvāpi tesaṃ bahubheravāni;

Athāparāni abhisambhaveyya, parissayāni kusalānuesī.

972.

‘‘Ātaṅkaphassena khudāya phuṭṭho, sītaṃ atuṇhaṃ [accuṇhaṃ (sī. syā.)] adhivāsayeyya;

So tehi phuṭṭho bahudhā anoko, vīriyaṃ parakkammadaḷhaṃ kareyya.

973.

‘‘Theyyaṃ na kāre [na kareyya (sī. syā. ka.)] na musā bhaṇeyya, mettāya phasse tasathāvarāni;

Yadāvilattaṃ manaso vijaññā, kaṇhassa pakkhoti vinodayeyya.

974.

‘‘Kodhātimānassa vasaṃ na gacche, mūlampi tesaṃ palikhañña tiṭṭhe;

Athappiyaṃ vā pana appiyaṃ vā, addhā bhavanto abhisambhaveyya.

975.

‘‘Paññaṃ purakkhatvā kalyāṇapīti, vikkhambhaye tāni parissayāni;

Aratiṃ sahetha sayanamhi pante, caturo sahetha paridevadhamme.

976.

‘‘Kiṃsū asissāmi kuvaṃ vā [kudha vā (ka.), kutha vā (niddesa)] asissaṃ, dukkhaṃ vata settha kvajja sessaṃ;

Ete vitakke paridevaneyye, vinayetha sekho aniketacārī.

977.

‘‘Annañca laddhā vasanañca kāle, mattaṃ so jaññā idha tosanatthaṃ;

So tesu gutto yatacāri gāme, rusitopi vācaṃ pharusaṃ na vajjā.

978.

‘‘Okkhittacakkhu na ca pādalolo, jhānānuyutto bahujāgarassa;

Upekkhamārabbha samāhitatto, takkāsayaṃ kukkucciyūpachinde.

979.

‘‘Cudito vacībhi satimābhinande, sabrahmacārīsu khilaṃ pabhinde;

Vācaṃ pamuñce kusalaṃ nātivelaṃ, janavādadhammāya na cetayeyya.

980.

‘‘Athāparaṃ pañca rajāni loke, yesaṃ satīmā vinayāya sikkhe;

Rūpesu saddesu atho rasesu, gandhesu phassesu sahetha rāgaṃ.

981.

‘‘Etesu dhammesu vineyya chandaṃ, bhikkhu satimā suvimuttacitto;

Kālena so sammā dhammaṃ parivīmaṃsamāno,

Ekodibhūto vihane tamaṃ so’’ti.

Kāmaṃ guhañca duṭṭhā ca, suddhañca paramā jarā;

Metteyyo ca pasūro ca, māgaṇḍi purābhedanaṃ.

Kalahaṃ dve ca byūhāni [byūhāni (sī.)], punadeva tuvaṭṭakaṃ;

Attadaṇḍavaraṃ suttaṃ, therapuṭṭhena [therapañhena (sī.), sāriputtena (syā.)] soḷasa;

‘‘न मे दिट्ठो इतो पुब्बे, (इच्‍चायस्मा सारिपुत्तो)

न सुतो उद कस्सचि।

एवं वग्गुवदो सत्था,

तुसिता गणिमागतो॥

९६२.

‘‘सदेवकस्स लोकस्स, यथा दिस्सति चक्खुमा।

सब्बं तमं विनोदेत्वा, एकोव रतिमज्झगा॥

९६३.

‘‘तं बुद्धं असितं तादिं, अकुहं गणिमागतं।

बहूनमिध बद्धानं, अत्थि पञ्हेन आगमं॥

९६४.

‘‘भिक्खुनो विजिगुच्छतो, भजतो रित्तमासनं।

रुक्खमूलं सुसानं वा, पब्बतानं गुहासु वा॥

९६५.

‘‘उच्‍चावचेसु सयनेसु, कीवन्तो तत्थ भेरवा।

येहि भिक्खु न वेधेय्य, निग्घोसे सयनासने॥

९६६.

‘‘कती परिस्सया लोके, गच्छतो अगतं दिसं।

ये भिक्खु अभिसम्भवे, पन्तम्हि सयनासने॥

९६७.

‘‘क्यास्स ब्यप्पथयो अस्सु, क्यास्सस्सु इध गोचरा।

कानि सीलब्बतानास्सु, पहितत्तस्स भिक्खुनो॥

९६८.

‘‘कं सो सिक्खं समादाय, एकोदि निपको सतो।

कम्मारो रजतस्सेव, निद्धमे मलमत्तनो’’॥

‘‘विजिगुच्छमानस्स यदिदं फासु, (सारिपुत्ताति भगवा)

रित्तासनं सयनं सेवतो चे।

सम्बोधिकामस्स यथानुधम्मं,

तं ते पवक्खामि यथा पजानं॥

‘‘पञ्‍चन्‍नं धीरो भयानं न भाये, भिक्खु सतो सपरियन्तचारी।

डंसाधिपातानं सरीसपानं, मनुस्सफस्सानं चतुप्पदानं॥

९७१.

‘‘परधम्मिकानम्पि न सन्तसेय्य, दिस्वापि तेसं बहुभेरवानि।

अथापरानि अभिसम्भवेय्य, परिस्सयानि कुसलानुएसी॥

९७२.

‘‘आतङ्कफस्सेन खुदाय फुट्ठो, सीतं अतुण्हं [अच्‍चुण्हं (सी॰ स्या॰)] अधिवासयेय्य।

सो तेहि फुट्ठो बहुधा अनोको, वीरियं परक्‍कम्मदळ्हं करेय्य॥

९७३.

‘‘थेय्यं न कारे [न करेय्य (सी॰ स्या॰ क॰)] न मुसा भणेय्य, मेत्ताय फस्से तसथावरानि।

यदाविलत्तं मनसो विजञ्‍ञा, कण्हस्स पक्खोति विनोदयेय्य॥

९७४.

‘‘कोधातिमानस्स वसं न गच्छे, मूलम्पि तेसं पलिखञ्‍ञ तिट्ठे।

अथप्पियं वा पन अप्पियं वा, अद्धा भवन्तो अभिसम्भवेय्य॥

९७५.

‘‘पञ्‍ञं पुरक्खत्वा कल्याणपीति, विक्खम्भये तानि परिस्सयानि।

अरतिं सहेथ सयनम्हि पन्ते, चतुरो सहेथ परिदेवधम्मे॥

९७६.

‘‘किंसू असिस्सामि कुवं वा [कुध वा (क॰), कुथ वा (निद्देस)] असिस्सं, दुक्खं वत सेत्थ क्‍वज्‍ज सेस्सं।

एते वितक्‍के परिदेवनेय्ये, विनयेथ सेखो अनिकेतचारी॥

९७७.

‘‘अन्‍नञ्‍च लद्धा वसनञ्‍च काले, मत्तं सो जञ्‍ञा इध तोसनत्थं।

सो तेसु गुत्तो यतचारि गामे, रुसितोपि वाचं फरुसं न वज्‍जा॥

९७८.

‘‘ओक्खित्तचक्खु न च पादलोलो, झानानुयुत्तो बहुजागरस्स।

उपेक्खमारब्भ समाहितत्तो, तक्‍कासयं कुक्‍कुच्‍चियूपछिन्दे॥

९७९.

‘‘चुदितो वचीभि सतिमाभिनन्दे, सब्रह्मचारीसु खिलं पभिन्दे।

वाचं पमुञ्‍चे कुसलं नातिवेलं, जनवादधम्माय न चेतयेय्य॥

९८०.

‘‘अथापरं पञ्‍च रजानि लोके, येसं सतीमा विनयाय सिक्खे।

रूपेसु सद्देसु अथो रसेसु, गन्धेसु फस्सेसु सहेथ रागं॥

९८१.

‘‘एतेसु धम्मेसु विनेय्य छन्दं, भिक्खु सतिमा सुविमुत्तचित्तो।

कालेन सो सम्मा धम्मं परिवीमंसमानो,

एकोदिभूतो विहने तमं सो’’ति॥

सारिपुत्तसुत्तं सोळसमं निट्ठितं। अट्ठकवग्गो चतुत्थो

निट्ठितो।

तस्सुद्दानं –

कामं गुहञ्‍च दुट्ठा च, सुद्धञ्‍च परमा जरा।

मेत्तेय्यो च पसूरो च, मागण्डि पुराभेदनं॥

कलहं द्वे च ब्यूहानि [ब्यूहानि (सी॰)], पुनदेव तुवट्टकं।

अत्तदण्डवरं सुत्तं, थेरपुट्ठेन [थेरपञ्हेन (सी॰), सारिपुत्तेन (स्या॰)] सोळस।

इति एतानि सुत्तानि, सब्बानट्ठकवग्गिकाति॥
