Description of an accomplished Muni(saint).


4.15 ATTADANDASUTTA[]

Translation[]

1. From him who has seized a stick fear arises. Look at people killing (each other); I will tell of grief as it is known to me. (941)

2. Seeing people struggling like fish in (a pond with) little water, seeing them obstructed by each other, a fear came over me. (942)

3. The world is completely unsubstantial, all quarters are shaken; wishing for a house for myself I did not see (one) uninhabited. (943)

4. But having seen (all beings) in the end obstructed, discontent arose in me; then I saw in this world an arrow, difficult to see, stuck in the heart. (944)

5. He who has been pierced by this arrow runs through all quarters; but having drawn out that arrow, he will not run, he will sit down (quietly). (945)

6. That students, having gone through; what ties(bonds,enslaves) in the world let him not apply himself to it; having wholly transcended desire, let him learn his own nibbana(nirvana, salvation, immortality). (946)

7. Let the Muni(saint) be truthful, without arrogance, undeceitful, free from slander, not angry, let him overcome avarice. (947)

8. Let the man who has turned his mind to Nibbana(nirvana,salvation,immortality) conquer sleepiness, drowsiness, and sloth; let him not live together with indolence, let him not indulge in conceit. (948)

9. Let him not be led into falsehood, let him not turn his affection to form; let him penetrate arrogance, let him wander abstaining from violence. (949)

10. Let him not delight in what is old, let him not bear with what is new, let him not grieve for what is lost, let him not give himself up to desire. (950)

11. (This desire) I call greed, the great stream, I call (it) precipitation, craving, a trouble, a bog of lust difficult to cross. (951)

12. The Muni(saint) who without deviating from truth stands fast on the firm ground (of Nibbana, being) a Brahmana, he, having forsaken everything, is indeed called calm. (952)

13. He indeed is wise, he is accomplished, having understood the Dhamma independent (of everything); wandering rightly in the world he does not envy any one here. (953)

14. Whosoever has here overcome lust, a tie difficult to do away with in the world, he does not grieve, he does not covet, having cut off the stream, and being without bonds. (954)

15. What is before (you), lay that aside; let there be nothing behind you; if you will not grasp after what is in the middle, you will wander calm. (955)

16. The man who has no desire at all for name and form (individuality) and who does not grieve over what is no more, he indeed does not decay in the world. (956)

17. He who does not think, 'this is mine' and 'for others there is also something,' he, not having egotism, does not grieve at having nothing. (957)

18. Not being harsh, not greedy, being without desire, and being the same under all circumstances (samo),--that I call a good result, when asked about an undaunted man. (958)

19. For him who is free from desire, for the discerning (man) there is no Samkhara(karma); abstaining from every sort of effort he sees happiness everywhere. (959)

20. The Muni(saint) does not reckon himself amongst the plain, nor amongst the low, nor amongst the distinguished; being calm and free from avarice, he does not grasp after nor reject anything. (960)

‘‘Attadaṇḍā bhayaṃ jātaṃ, janaṃ passatha medhagaṃ;

Saṃvegaṃ kittayissāmi, yathā saṃvijitaṃ mayā.

942.

‘‘Phandamānaṃ pajaṃ disvā, macche appodake yathā;

Aññamaññehi byāruddhe, disvā maṃ bhayamāvisi.

943.

‘‘Samantamasāro loko, disā sabbā sameritā;

Icchaṃ bhavanamattano, nāddasāsiṃ anositaṃ.

944.

‘‘Osānetveva byāruddhe, disvā me aratī ahu;

Athettha sallamaddakkhiṃ, duddasaṃ hadayanissitaṃ.

945.

‘‘Yena sallena otiṇṇo, disā sabbā vidhāvati;

Tameva sallamabbuyha, na dhāvati na sīdati.

946.

‘‘Tattha sikkhānugīyanti [sikkhānukiriyanti (ka.)], yāni loke gadhitāni;

Na tesu pasuto siyā, nibbijjha sabbaso kāme;

Sikkhe nibbānamattano.

947.

‘‘Sacco siyā appagabbho, amāyo rittapesuṇo;

Akkodhano lobhapāpaṃ, vevicchaṃ vitare muni.

948.

‘‘Niddaṃ tandiṃ sahe thīnaṃ, pamādena na saṃvase;

Atimāne na tiṭṭheyya, nibbānamanaso naro.

949.

‘‘Mosavajje na nīyetha, rūpe snehaṃ na kubbaye;

Mānañca parijāneyya, sāhasā virato care.

950.

‘‘Purāṇaṃ nābhinandeyya, nave khantiṃ na kubbaye;

Hiyyamāne na soceyya, ākāsaṃ na sito siyā.

951.

‘‘Gedhaṃ brūmi mahoghoti, ājavaṃ brūmi jappanaṃ;

Ārammaṇaṃ pakappanaṃ, kāmapaṅko duraccayo.

952.

‘‘Saccā avokkamma [avokkamaṃ (niddesa)] muni, thale tiṭṭhati brāhmaṇo;

Sabbaṃ so [sabbaso (syā. ka.)] paṭinissajja, sa ve santoti vuccati.

953.

‘‘Sa ve vidvā sa vedagū, ñatvā dhammaṃ anissito;

Sammā so loke iriyāno, na pihetīdha kassaci.

954.

‘‘Yodha kāme accatari, saṅgaṃ loke duraccayaṃ;

Na so socati nājjheti, chinnasoto abandhano.

955.

‘‘Yaṃ pubbe taṃ visosehi, pacchā te māhu kiñcanaṃ;

Majjhe ce no gahessasi, upasanto carissasi.

956.

‘‘Sabbaso nāmarūpasmiṃ, yassa natthi mamāyitaṃ;

Asatā ca na socati, sa ve loke na jīyati.

957.

‘‘Yassa natthi idaṃ meti, paresaṃ vāpi kiñcanaṃ;

Mamattaṃ so asaṃvindaṃ, natthi meti na socati.

958.

‘‘Aniṭṭhurī ananugiddho, anejo sabbadhī samo;

Tamānisaṃsaṃ pabrūmi, pucchito avikampinaṃ.

959.

‘‘Anejassa vijānato, natthi kāci nisaṅkhati [nisaṅkhiti (sī. pī.)].

Virato so viyārabbhā, khemaṃ passati sabbadhi.

960.

‘‘Na samesu na omesu, na ussesu vadate muni;

Santo so vītamaccharo, nādeti na nirassatī’’ti.

‘‘अत्तदण्डा भयं जातं, जनं पस्सथ मेधगं।

संवेगं कित्तयिस्सामि, यथा संविजितं मया॥

९४२.

‘‘फन्दमानं पजं दिस्वा, मच्छे अप्पोदके यथा।

अञ्‍ञमञ्‍ञेहि ब्यारुद्धे, दिस्वा मं भयमाविसि॥

९४३.

‘‘समन्तमसारो लोको, दिसा सब्बा समेरिता।

इच्छं भवनमत्तनो, नाद्दसासिं अनोसितं॥

९४४.

‘‘ओसानेत्वेव ब्यारुद्धे, दिस्वा मे अरती अहु।

अथेत्थ सल्‍लमद्दक्खिं, दुद्दसं हदयनिस्सितं॥

९४५.

‘‘येन सल्‍लेन ओतिण्णो, दिसा सब्बा विधावति।

तमेव सल्‍लमब्बुय्ह, न धावति न सीदति॥

९४६.

‘‘तत्थ सिक्खानुगीयन्ति [सिक्खानुकिरियन्ति (क॰)], यानि लोके गधितानि।

न तेसु पसुतो सिया, निब्बिज्झ सब्बसो कामे।

सिक्खे निब्बानमत्तनो॥

९४७.

‘‘सच्‍चो सिया अप्पगब्भो, अमायो रित्तपेसुणो।

अक्‍कोधनो लोभपापं, वेविच्छं वितरे मुनि॥

९४८.

‘‘निद्दं तन्दिं सहे थीनं, पमादेन न संवसे।

अतिमाने न तिट्ठेय्य, निब्बानमनसो नरो॥

९४९.

‘‘मोसवज्‍जे न नीयेथ, रूपे स्नेहं न कुब्बये।

मानञ्‍च परिजानेय्य, साहसा विरतो चरे॥

९५०.

‘‘पुराणं नाभिनन्देय्य, नवे खन्तिं न कुब्बये।

हिय्यमाने न सोचेय्य, आकासं न सितो सिया॥

९५१.

‘‘गेधं ब्रूमि महोघोति, आजवं ब्रूमि जप्पनं।

आरम्मणं पकप्पनं, कामपङ्को दुरच्‍चयो॥

९५२.

‘‘सच्‍चा अवोक्‍कम्म [अवोक्‍कमं (निद्देस)] मुनि, थले तिट्ठति ब्राह्मणो।

सब्बं सो [सब्बसो (स्या॰ क॰)] पटिनिस्सज्‍ज, स वे सन्तोति वुच्‍चति॥

९५३.

‘‘स वे विद्वा स वेदगू, ञत्वा धम्मं अनिस्सितो।

सम्मा सो लोके इरियानो, न पिहेतीध कस्सचि॥

९५४.

‘‘योध कामे अच्‍चतरि, सङ्गं लोके दुरच्‍चयं।

न सो सोचति नाज्झेति, छिन्‍नसोतो अबन्धनो॥

९५५.

‘‘यं पुब्बे तं विसोसेहि, पच्छा ते माहु किञ्‍चनं।

मज्झे चे नो गहेस्ससि, उपसन्तो चरिस्ससि॥

९५६.

‘‘सब्बसो नामरूपस्मिं, यस्स नत्थि ममायितं।

असता च न सोचति, स वे लोके न जीयति॥

९५७.

‘‘यस्स नत्थि इदं मेति, परेसं वापि किञ्‍चनं।

ममत्तं सो असंविन्दं, नत्थि मेति न सोचति॥

‘‘अनिट्ठुरी अननुगिद्धो, अनेजो सब्बधी समो।

तमानिसंसं पब्रूमि, पुच्छितो अविकम्पिनं॥

९५९.

‘‘अनेजस्स विजानतो, नत्थि काचि निसङ्खति [निसङ्खिति (सी॰ पी॰)]॥

विरतो सो वियारब्भा, खेमं पस्सति सब्बधि॥

९६०.

‘‘न समेसु न ओमेसु, न उस्सेसु वदते मुनि।

सन्तो सो वीतमच्छरो, नादेति न निरस्सती’’ति॥

अत्तदण्डसुत्तं पन्‍नरसमं निट्ठितं।
