How a Bhikkhu(Monk) attains bliss, what his duties are, and what he is to avoid.


4.14 TUVATAKASUTTA[]

Translation[]

1. 'I ask you, who are a kinsman of the Adicchas and a great Isi(Rishi,saint), about seclusion (viveka) and the state of peace. How is a Bhikkhu(Monk), after having seen it, extinguished, not grasping at anything in the world?' (921)

2. 'Let him completely cut off the root of what is called papanka (delusion), thinking "I am wisdom;"'--so said Bhagava(Lord Buddha) ,--'all the desires that arise inwardly, let him learn to subdue them, always being thoughtful. (922)

3. 'Let him learn every Dhamma inwardly or outwardly; let him not therefore be proud, for that is not called bliss by the good. (923)

4. 'Let him not therefore think himself better (than others or) low or equal (to others); questioned by different people, let him not adorn himself. (924)

5. 'Let the Bhikkhu(Monk) be appeased inwardly, let him not seek peace from any other (quarter); for him who is inwardly appeased there is nothing grasped or rejected. (925)

6. 'As in the middle (i.e. depth) of the sea no wave is born, (but as it) remains still, so let the Bhikkhu(Monk) be still, without desire, let him not desire anything whatever.' (926)

7. He with open eyes expounded clearly the Dhamma that removes (all) dangers; tell (now) the dhamma practices; the precepts or samadhi(self absorptive trance) (927)

8. Bhagava(Lord Buddha) : 'Let him not be greedy with his eyes, let him keep his ears from the talk of the town, let him not be greedy after sweet things, and let him not desire anything in the world. (928)

9. 'When he is touched by the touch (of illness), let the Bhikkhu(Monk) not lament, and let him not wish for existence anywhere, and let him not tremble at dangers. (929)

10. 'Having obtained boiled rice and drink, solid food and clothes, let him not store up (these things), and let him not be anxious, if he does not get them. (930)

11. 'Let him be meditative, not prying, let him abstain from misbehaviour, let him not be indolent, let the Bhikkhu(Monk) live in his quiet dwelling. (931)

12. 'Let him not sleep too much, let him apply himself ardently to watching, let him abandon sloth, deceit, laughter, sport, sexual intercourse, and adornment. (932)

13. 'Let him not apply himself to practising (the hymns of) the Athabbana(-veda), to (the interpretation of) dreams and signs, nor to astrology; let not (my) follower (mamaka) devote himself to (interpreting) the cry of birds, to causing impregnation, nor to (the are of) medicine. (933)

14. 'Let the Bhikkhu(Monk) not tremble at blame, nor puff himself up when praised; let him drive off covetousness together with avarice, anger, and slander. (934)

15. 'Let the Bhikkhu(Monk) not be engaged in purchase and sale, let him not blame others in anything, let him not scold in the village, let him not from love of gain speak to people. (935)

16. 'Let not the Bhikkhu(Monk) be a boaster, and let him not speak coherent language; let him not learn pride, let him not speak quarrelsome language. (936)

17. 'Let him not be led into falsehood, let him not consciously do wicked things; and with respect to livelihood, panna(direct experiential understanding), virtue, and (holy) works let him not despise others. (937)

18. 'Having heard much talk from much-talking Samanas(monk) let him not irritated answer them with harsh language; for the good do not thwart others. (938)

19. 'Having understood this Dhamma, let the investigating and always thoughtful Bhikkhu(Monk) learn; having conceived bliss to consist in peace, let him not be indolent in Gotama's (Buddha's) commandments. (939)

20. 'For he a conqueror unconquered saw the Dhamma visibly, without any traditional instruction; therefore let him learn, heedful in his, Bhagava(Lord Buddha) 's, commandments, and always worshipping.' (940)

‘‘Pucchāmi taṃ ādiccabandhu [ādiccabandhuṃ (sī. syā.)], vivekaṃ santipadañca mahesi;

Kathaṃ disvā nibbāti bhikkhu, anupādiyāno lokasmiṃ kiñci’’.

922.

‘‘Mūlaṃ papañcasaṅkhāya, (iti bhagavā)

Mantā asmīti sabbamuparundhe [sabbamuparuddhe (syā. pī. ka.)];

Yā kāci taṇhā ajjhattaṃ,

Tāsaṃ vinayā [vinayāya (?)] sadā sato sikkhe.

923.

‘‘Yaṃ kiñci dhammamabhijaññā, ajjhattaṃ athavāpi bahiddhā;

Na tena thāmaṃ [mānaṃ (sī. ka.)] kubbetha, na hi sā nibbuti sataṃ vuttā.

924.

‘‘Seyyo na tena maññeyya, nīceyyo athavāpi sarikkho;

Phuṭṭho [puṭṭho (sī. syā. ka.)] anekarūpehi, nātumānaṃ vikappayaṃ tiṭṭhe.

925.

‘‘Ajjhattamevupasame , na aññato bhikkhu santimeseyya;

Ajjhattaṃ upasantassa, natthi attā kuto nirattā vā.

926.

‘‘Majjhe yathā samuddassa, ūmi no jāyatī ṭhito hoti;

Evaṃ ṭhito anejassa, ussadaṃ bhikkhu na kareyya kuhiñci’’.

927.

‘‘Akittayī vivaṭacakkhu, sakkhidhammaṃ parissayavinayaṃ;

Paṭipadaṃ vadehi bhaddante, pātimokkhaṃ athavāpi samādhiṃ’’.

928.

‘‘Cakkhūhi neva lolassa, gāmakathāya āvaraye sotaṃ;

Rase ca nānugijjheyya, na ca mamāyetha kiñci lokasmiṃ.

929.

‘‘Phassena yadā phuṭṭhassa, paridevaṃ bhikkhu na kareyya kuhiñci;

Bhavañca nābhijappeyya, bheravesu ca na sampavedheyya.

930.

‘‘Annānamatho pānānaṃ, khādanīyānaṃ athopi vatthānaṃ;

Laddhā na sannidhiṃ kayirā, na ca parittase tāni alabhamāno.

931.

‘‘Jhāyī na pādalolassa, virame kukkuccā nappamajjeyya;

Athāsanesu sayanesu, appasaddesu bhikkhu vihareyya.

932.

‘‘Niddaṃ na bahulīkareyya, jāgariyaṃ bhajeyya ātāpī;

Tandiṃ māyaṃ hassaṃ khiḍḍaṃ, methunaṃ vippajahe savibhūsaṃ.

933.

‘‘Āthabbaṇaṃ supinaṃ lakkhaṇaṃ, no vidahe athopi nakkhattaṃ;

Virutañca gabbhakaraṇaṃ, tikicchaṃ māmako na seveyya.

934.

‘‘Nindāya nappavedheyya, na uṇṇameyya pasaṃsito bhikkhu;

Lobhaṃ saha macchariyena, kodhaṃ pesuṇiyañca panudeyya.

935.

‘‘Kayavikkaye na tiṭṭheyya, upavādaṃ bhikkhu na kareyya kuhiñci;

Gāme ca nābhisajjeyya, lābhakamyā janaṃ na lapayeyya.

936.

‘‘Na ca katthitā siyā bhikkhu, na ca vācaṃ payuttaṃ bhāseyya;

Pāgabbhiyaṃ na sikkheyya, kathaṃ viggāhikaṃ na kathayeyya.

937.

‘‘Mosavajje na nīyetha, sampajāno saṭhāni na kayirā;

Atha jīvitena paññāya, sīlabbatena nāññamatimaññe.

938.

‘‘Sutvā rusito bahuṃ vācaṃ, samaṇānaṃ vā puthujanānaṃ [puthuvacanānaṃ (sī. syā. pī.)];

Pharusena ne na paṭivajjā, na hi santo paṭisenikaronti.

939.

‘‘Etañca dhammamaññāya, vicinaṃ bhikkhu sadā sato sikkhe;

Santīti nibbutiṃ ñatvā, sāsane gotamassa na pamajjeyya.

940.

‘‘Abhibhū hi so anabhibhūto, sakkhidhammamanītihamadassī;

Tasmā hi tassa bhagavato sāsane, appamatto sadā namassamanusikkhe’’ti.

९२१.

‘‘पुच्छामि तं आदिच्‍चबन्धु [आदिच्‍चबन्धुं (सी॰ स्या॰)], विवेकं सन्तिपदञ्‍च महेसि।

कथं दिस्वा निब्बाति भिक्खु, अनुपादियानो लोकस्मिं किञ्‍चि’’॥

९२२.

‘‘मूलं पपञ्‍चसङ्खाय, (इति भगवा)

मन्ता अस्मीति सब्बमुपरुन्धे [सब्बमुपरुद्धे (स्या॰ पी॰ क॰)]।

या काचि तण्हा अज्झत्तं,

तासं विनया [विनयाय (?)] सदा सतो सिक्खे॥

९२३.

‘‘यं किञ्‍चि धम्ममभिजञ्‍ञा, अज्झत्तं अथवापि बहिद्धा।

न तेन थामं [मानं (सी॰ क॰)] कुब्बेथ, न हि सा निब्बुति सतं वुत्ता॥

९२४.

‘‘सेय्यो न तेन मञ्‍ञेय्य, नीचेय्यो अथवापि सरिक्खो।

फुट्ठो [पुट्ठो (सी॰ स्या॰ क॰)] अनेकरूपेहि, नातुमानं विकप्पयं तिट्ठे॥

९२५.

‘‘अज्झत्तमेवुपसमे , न अञ्‍ञतो भिक्खु सन्तिमेसेय्य।

अज्झत्तं उपसन्तस्स, नत्थि अत्ता कुतो निरत्ता वा॥

९२६.

‘‘मज्झे यथा समुद्दस्स, ऊमि नो जायती ठितो होति।

एवं ठितो अनेजस्स, उस्सदं भिक्खु न करेय्य कुहिञ्‍चि’’॥

९२७.

‘‘अकित्तयी विवटचक्खु, सक्खिधम्मं परिस्सयविनयं।

पटिपदं वदेहि भद्दन्ते, पातिमोक्खं अथवापि समाधिं’’॥

९२८.

‘‘चक्खूहि नेव लोलस्स, गामकथाय आवरये सोतं।

रसे च नानुगिज्झेय्य, न च ममायेथ किञ्‍चि लोकस्मिं॥

९२९.

‘‘फस्सेन यदा फुट्ठस्स, परिदेवं भिक्खु न करेय्य कुहिञ्‍चि।

भवञ्‍च नाभिजप्पेय्य, भेरवेसु च न सम्पवेधेय्य॥

९३०.

‘‘अन्‍नानमथो पानानं, खादनीयानं अथोपि वत्थानं।

लद्धा न सन्‍निधिं कयिरा, न च परित्तसे तानि अलभमानो॥

९३१.

‘‘झायी न पादलोलस्स, विरमे कुक्‍कुच्‍चा नप्पमज्‍जेय्य।

अथासनेसु सयनेसु, अप्पसद्देसु भिक्खु विहरेय्य॥

९३२.

‘‘निद्दं न बहुलीकरेय्य, जागरियं भजेय्य आतापी।

तन्दिं मायं हस्सं खिड्डं, मेथुनं विप्पजहे सविभूसं॥

९३३.

‘‘आथब्बणं सुपिनं लक्खणं, नो विदहे अथोपि नक्खत्तं।

विरुतञ्‍च गब्भकरणं, तिकिच्छं मामको न सेवेय्य॥

९३४.

‘‘निन्दाय नप्पवेधेय्य, न उण्णमेय्य पसंसितो भिक्खु।

लोभं सह मच्छरियेन, कोधं पेसुणियञ्‍च पनुदेय्य॥

९३५.

‘‘कयविक्‍कये न तिट्ठेय्य, उपवादं भिक्खु न करेय्य कुहिञ्‍चि।

गामे च नाभिसज्‍जेय्य, लाभकम्या जनं न लपयेय्य॥

९३६.

‘‘न च कत्थिता सिया भिक्खु, न च वाचं पयुत्तं भासेय्य।

पागब्भियं न सिक्खेय्य, कथं विग्गाहिकं न कथयेय्य॥

९३७.

‘‘मोसवज्‍जे न नीयेथ, सम्पजानो सठानि न कयिरा।

अथ जीवितेन पञ्‍ञाय, सीलब्बतेन नाञ्‍ञमतिमञ्‍ञे॥

९३८.

‘‘सुत्वा रुसितो बहुं वाचं, समणानं वा पुथुजनानं [पुथुवचनानं (सी॰ स्या॰ पी॰)]।

फरुसेन ने न पटिवज्‍जा, न हि सन्तो पटिसेनिकरोन्ति॥

९३९.

‘‘एतञ्‍च धम्ममञ्‍ञाय, विचिनं भिक्खु सदा सतो सिक्खे।

सन्तीति निब्बुतिं ञत्वा, सासने गोतमस्स न पमज्‍जेय्य॥

९४०.

‘‘अभिभू हि सो अनभिभूतो, सक्खिधम्ममनीतिहमदस्सी।

तस्मा हि तस्स भगवतो सासने, अप्पमत्तो सदा नमस्समनुसिक्खे’’ति॥

तुवटकसुत्तं चुद्दसमं निट्ठितं।
