Chapter 4 : Connected Discourses on Entering (Okkantasamyutta) {Samyutta-25}[]

302. The Eye (Cakkhu)[]

At Savatthi. "Bhikkhus(monks), the eye is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. The ear ... The nose ... The tongue ... The body ... The mind is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. One who places faith in these teachings and resolves on them thus is called a faith-follower, one who has entered the fixed course of rightness, entered the plane of superior persons, transcended the plane of the worldlings. He is incapable of doing any deed by reason of which he might be reborn in hell, in the animal realm, or in the domain of ghosts; he is incapable of passing away without having realized the fruit of stream-entry(Sotapatti). 268

"One for whom these teachings are accepted thus after being pondered to a sufficient degree with illuminated-insight(panna) is called a Dhamma-follower, 269 one who has entered the fixed course of rightness, entered the plane of superior persons, transcended the plane of the worldlings. He is incapable of doing any deed by reason of which he might be reborn in hell, in the animal realm, or in the domain of ghosts; he is incapable of passing away without having realized the fruit of stream-entry.

"One who knows and sees(in meditation,passati ref. Vipassana meditation) these teachings thus is called a stream-enterer(Sotapanna), no longer bound to the nether world, fixed in destiny, with enlightenment as his destination." 270


303. Forms (Rupa)[]

At Savatthi. "Bhikkhus(monks), forms are impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. Sounds ... Odours ... Tastes ... Tactile objects ... Mental phenomena(dhamma) are impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. One who places faith in these teachings and resolves on them thus is called a faith-follower, one who has entered the fixed course of rightness...; he is incapable of passing away without having realized the fruit of stream-entry(Sotapatti).

"One for whom these teachings are accepted thus after being pondered to a sufficient degree with illuminated-insight(panna) is called a Dhamma-follower, one who has entered the fixed course of rightness . . .(rest similar to 302); he is incapable of passing away without having realized the fruit of stream-entry.

"One who knows and sees(in meditation,passati ref. Vipassana meditation) these teachings thus is called a stream-enterer(Sotapanna), no longer bound to the nether world, fixed in destiny, with enlightenment as his destination."


304. Consciousness (Vinnana sans. Vigyan)[]

At Savatthi. "Bhikkhus(monks), eye-consciousness is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. Ear-consciousness ... Nose-consciousness ... Tongue-consciousness ... Body-consciousness ... Mind-consciousness is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. One who knows and sees(in meditation,passati ref. Vipassana meditation) these teachings thus is called a stream-enterer(Sotapanna), no longer bound to the nether world, fixed in destiny, with enlightenment as his destination."


305. Contact (Samphassa sans. Sam-sparsh)[]

At Savatthi. "Bhikkhus(monks), eye-contact(of sense with object;phassa/sparsh) is impermanent, changing becoming otherwise. Ear-contact ... Nose-contact ... Tongue-contact ... Body-contact ... Mind-contact is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. (rest similar to 302) One who knows and sees(in meditation,passati) these teachings thus is called a stream-enterer(Sotapanna), no longer bound to the nether world, fixed in destiny, with enlightenment as his destination."


306. sensation(vedana) (Samphassaja sans. Sam-sparshjya)[]

At Savatthi. "Bhikkhus(monks), sensation(vedana) born of eye-contact(of sense with object;phassa/sparsh) is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. sensation(vedana) born of ear-contact . . . sensation(vedana) born of nose-contact . . . sensation(vedana) born of tongue-contact . . . sensation(vedana) born of body-contact . . . sensation(vedana) born of mind-contact(phassa/sparsh) is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise.(rest similar to 302) One who knows and sees(in meditation,passati) these teachings thus is called a stream-enterer(Sotapanna), no longer bound to the nether world, fixed in destiny, with enlightenment as his destination."


307. Perception (Rupa-sanna sans. Rupa-sangya)[]

At Savatthi. "Bhikkhus(monks), perception(sanna sans. sangya) of forms is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. Perception of sounds ... Perception of odours . . . Perception of tastes . . . Perception of tactile objects ... Perception of mental phenomena(dhamma) is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise.(rest similar to 302) One who knows and sees(in meditation,passati) these teachings thus is called a stream-enterer(Sotapanna), no longer bound to the nether world, fixed in destiny, with enlightenment as his destination."


308. Cognitive-Awareness (Rupa-sancetana)[]

At Savatthi. "Bhikkhus(monks), cognitive-awareness(sancetana) regarding forms is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. cognitive-awareness regarding sounds ... cognitive-awareness regarding odours ... cognitive-awareness regarding tastes ... cognitive-awareness regarding tactile objects ... cognitive-awareness regarding mental phenomena(dhamma) is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise.(rest similar to 302) One who knows and sees(in meditation,passati) these teachings thus is called a stream-enterer(Sotapanna), no longer bound to the nether world, fixed in destiny, with enlightenment as his destination."


309. Craving (Rupa-tanha sans. Rupa-trishna)[]

At Savatthi. "Bhikkhus(monks), craving(tanha sans. trishna) for forms is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. Craving for sounds ... Craving for odours ... Craving for tastes ... Craving for tactile objects ... craving(tanha sans. trishna) for mental phenomena(dhamma) is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise.(rest similar to 302) One who knows and sees(in meditation,passati) these teachings thus is called a stream-enterer(Sotapanna), no longer bound to the nether world, fixed in destiny, with enlightenment as his destination."


310. Elements (Pathavidhatu)[]

At Savatthi. "Bhikkhus(monks), the earth element(dhatu) is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. The water element ... The heat element ... The air element ... The space element ... The consciousness(vinnana sans. vigyan) element is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. 271 (rest similar to 302)One who knows and sees(in meditation,passati) these teachings thus is called a stream-enterer(Sotapanna), no longer bound to the nether world, fixed in destiny, with enlightenment as his destination."


311. Aggregates (Khandha sans. Skandha)[]

At Savatthi. "Bhikkhus(monks), form is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise. sensation(vedana) ... perception(sanna sans. sangya) ... sankhara(compulsive-behavior-conditioning) ... consciousness(vinnana sans. vigyan) is impermanent, changing, becoming otherwise.

One who places faith in these teachings and resolves on them thus is called a faith-follower, one 'who has entered the fixed course of rightness, entered the plane of superior persons, transcended the plane of the worldlings. He is incapable of doing any deed by reason of which he might be reborn in hell, in the animal realm, or in the domain of ghosts; he is incapable of passing away without having realized the fruit of stream-entry(Sotapatti).
