This Glossary is created to help clarifying some translation issues of the Tipitaka. Also, this is a good start for searching if you are looking for some technical terms.

We realize that there is no standard way to translate the Tipitaka, as scholars could never settle on any translation. For example, the famous term Dukka is generally translated suffering, but some scholars prefer oppression, dissatisfaction, or disease. So, this Glossary is a starting point for us in unifying and standardize the Tipitaka translation.

How to use the glossary

This Glossary is in alphabetical order. However, some alphabets might not yet been added to the list due to the lack of terms in with the alphabets.

Searching Wikipitaka always include this glossary. So, if you come to this page through searching, you might want to look at your keyword in the glossary to get some more keywords for further search.

Glossary is adapted from Dictionary of Buddhism: Thai-English by P.A. Payutto. This dictionary also has a list of Thai words, but it also has Pali root and English translations. Many Sanskrit words are added to help many people who understand Sanskrit like languages such as Hindi etc.

Amulhavinaya - verdict of past insanity.
Anabhijjha - non-covetousness; non-avarice.
Anagami - a Non-Returner; one who has attained the third stage of progress. This is achieved after experience of 8th samadhi/trance state after which one will not be reborn on earth, rather one will be reborn only once in upper-heaven{brahmaloka} among arch-angels{brahmas} there.
Anagamimagga anagami marg the Path of Never-Returning; the Path of the Non- Returner {see above}.
Anagamiphala - the Fruit of Never-Returning; the Result of the Non-Returner {see anagami above}.
Anagarika Anagarika lit. a homeless one; one who enters the homeless/ascetic life without formally entering the Sangha{order}.

Bhagava/Bhagwa Bhagwan in sanskrit the Bhagwan{God}; The Buddha;{This title is repeatedly used to address Gautam Buddha everywhere in the original Pali version of Tipitaka} In India this title especially 'Bhagwan' is used for God as well as for those enlightened persons who have become one with God . The root for this word is 'Bhagna' meaning to shatter, to eliminate & to break {the 3 bonds/fetters of material word i.e. Raga/liking/desire, dosa/dvesh/disliking/hatred, moha/deception/ignorance } . So the words Bhagava,Bhagawa & Bhagawan also represent for the person who has broken all the sanharas or sins of the material world , became absolutely holy & attained all the transcendental states i.e. trance states of self absorption in purity ; and has divine beneficient abilities & magical powers too whose blessings can transform lives.

Bhavana Bhavana development; mental culture; meditation; developing understanding; grasping.
Bhavanamaya Bhavanamayi {merit} gained through, or connected with, meditation; merit accomplished by mental culture; mental culture as a way of making merit.
Bhavanamayapanna Bhavana mayi Pragya {divine} wisdom/knowledge resulting from mental development through direct experience in meditation; understanding through practice {note: This is best knowledge out of all types of panna, others are 1.sutamayapanna/by-listening/reading 2. cintamayapanna/by-thinking/logic/reasoning}.
Bhavanapadhana Bhavana Pradhan the effort to develop unrisen good; the effort to develop wholesome states.
Bhavanga bhavang life-continuum; the subliminal consciousness; constituent of becoming; the passive state of mind.
Bhavatanha Bhava trishna craving for existence; craving for rebirth; craving for sensual pleasures connected with the view of eternalism.
Bhavetabbadhamma Bhavetavya Dharma that {knowledge} which is to be developed/grasped/understood, i.e. the Noble Eightfold Path & the knowledge gained by experience/revealed in meditation, note: several transcendental {divine} or practical aspects which are generally not taught, these are to be understood by experience using meditation.
