CHULAVAGGA (THE MINOR SECTION)
SIXTH KHANDHAKA (ON DWELLINGS AND FURNITURE)
Chapter-18.
1. Now at that time the Bhikkhus made use elsewhere of beds which were appurtenances to the Vihara of a certain lay-disciple (upasaka).
Then that upasaka murmured, &c.
They told the matter to the Lord Buddha.
'Things appurtenant to one place are not, O Bhikkhus, to be used in another. Whosoever does so, shall be guilty of a dukkata.'
Now at that time the Bhikkhus, fearing to offend if they took (things to sit upon) even into the Uposatha Hall, or the meeting-place, sat on the ground; and their legs and robes got soiled.
They told the matter to the Lord Buddha.
'I allow you, O Bhikkhus, to take things away for a certain time only.'
Now at that time a large Vihara belonging to the Sangha went to ruin. The Bhikkhus, fearing to offend, did not take the bedding in it away.
They told this matter to the Lord Buddha.
'I allow you, O Bhikkhus, to take away things in order to save them from destruction.'
