SN 38.5 Having reached take-in Assāsappattasutta[]

1.1

“Friend Sāriputta, it is called ‘having reached take-in’.

“‘Assāsappatto, assāsappatto’ti, āvuso sāriputta, vuccati.

[assāso : Inhaled air, inhalation; comfort, consolation. take-in what is good (the Noble Eightfold Path)

assāsa : [m.] 1. inhalation; 2. comfort; consolation.

patto : Obtained, reached; having reached.

āvuso :[ind.] (Vocative), friend; brother. (form of polite address among monks).

vuccati :[vac + ya] to be said or called.]

In what respect then indeed, friend, is ‘having reached take-in’?”

Kittāvatā nu kho, āvuso, assāsappatto hotī”ti?

[kittāvatā :[adv.] how far? in what respect? kitti :[f.] fame; renown.

nu : then, now.

kho : [ind.] indeed; really; surely; (an enclictic particle of affirmative and emphasis).

hoti :[hū + a] to be; exists.]

“When a friend truly understands the six sensory input of contacts’ origin, settling down, pleasurable, danger, and destroy, true nature of things, at that point they’ve ‘having reached take-in’.”

“Yato kho, āvuso, bhikkhu channaṃ phassāyatanānaṃ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañcaādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti, ettāvatā kho, āvuso, assāsappatto hotī”ti.

“But, indeed friend, is there a path and a practice for realisation to this ‘take-in’?”

“Atthi panāvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā, etassa assāsassa sacchikiriyāyā”ti?

[sacchikiriyā :[f.] realisation; experiencing.]

“There is indeed, friend, this way of path, for realisation to this ‘take-in’.” …

“Atthi kho, āvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā, etassa assāsassa sacchikiriyāyā”ti.

“What now friend, which way of path, for realisation to this ‘take-in’?”

“Katamo panāvuso, maggo katamā paṭipadā, etassa assāsassa sacchikiriyāyā”ti?

[katamo :What? which?

pana :[(Adversative and interogative particle) ind.] and; yet; but; out the contrary; and now; more over.]

“This only indeed, friend, the Noble Eightfold Path, for realisation to this ‘take-in’ as below—

“Ayameva kho, āvuso, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo etassa assāsassa sacchikiriyāya, seyyathidaṃ—

[ayaṃ :[(nom. sing. of ima), m. ; f.] this person.

eva :[ind.] (emphatic particle), only.

seyyathidaṁ : seyyathī’daṁ, (sa+yathā+idaṁ), 【無】如下。as below.]

Right View, Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration.

sammādiṭṭhi sammāsaṅkappa sammāvācā sammākammanta sammāājīva sammāvāyama sammāsati sammāsamādhi.

This indeed, friend, this way of path, for realisation to this ‘take-in’”.

Ayaṃ kho, āvuso, maggo ayaṃ paṭipadā, etassa assāsassa sacchikiriyāyā”ti.

“Good, friend, a well-behaved woman way of path, for realisation to this ‘take-in’.

“Bhaddako, āvuso, maggo bhaddikā paṭipadā, etassa assāsassa sacchikiriyāya.

[bhaddako :Good, happy.

bhaddikā :[f.] a well-behaved woman.]



1.11

Enough! indeed friend Sāriputta, with earnestness.”

Alañca panāvuso sāriputta, appamādāyā”ti.

[alaṃ :[ind.] enough! have done with! stop!  (adj.), able; suitable.

appamāda :[m.] vigilance; earnestness.]
